Job Description:
Flatbush-Tompkins Congregational Church (FTCC) is a
145-year-old historic landmark building located in the Ditmas Park area of Brooklyn, NY. FTCC is a member of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches ("NACCC") and is seeking a part-time Organist/Choir Director further to develop the strong musical program of the Church. The Organist/Choir Director works closely with the pastor choirs and is the central figure in ensuring the quality and substance of the music that serves as an integral part of the Church's vision through its musical Ministry. In addition to maintaining a good working relationship with the pastor and choir, the Organist/Choir Director will have proven experience in choral directing and organ performance and maintenance.

The FTCC organ is a 31–Rank /Austin Pipe Organ (1965). A Steinway Grand Piano is also used in the Church's worship service.

Professional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Music (minimum)
  • Experience with choral directing and development of choral sound and musicianship
  • Experience in organ performance
  • Experience working with youth and children's choirs

Duties:
Provide organ, choral, or other music at all principal services of the Church, including, but not limited to:

  • All weekly Sunday worship services
  • Christmas services, including Candlelight Vespers
  • Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday
  • Weddings, funerals, and any other significant events as required
  • Holding one regular rehearsal of the choirs weekly and any others deemed necessary
  • Continuing to develop the vocal "sound" of the Chancel Choir, training in musicality and a good choral technique, maintaining the choir's excellent acapella capabilities and developing vision for the Chancel Choir's Ministry
  • Effectively managing/utilizing professional singers to enhance the mission of the music ministry
  • Promoting fellowship with other church choirs and encouraging collaborative events - ex. yearly Gospel Fest
  • Recruiting congregational talent for various choirs and musical groups; ex. Spring Concert (in June), and when Chancel Choir is on leave (July/August)

The Organist/Choir Director is a regular member of the staff and is expected to:
1. Attend staff meetings as required and meet with the pastor as necessary
2. Be a team player
3. Prepare publicity releases and advertising for concerts and performances as needed
4. Responsible for personal musical preparation, including organ practice and study of scores
5. Maintenance of the FTCC music library
6. Hire professional musicians, as appropriate, and within the parameters of the FTCC budget
for liturgical occasions and special services
